This high failure rate is exacerbated by limited access to resources, mentorship, and capital, leaving many young entrepreneurs at a disadvantage.
The Local Impact
In Montana’s rural settings, Black youth often encounter additional systemic barriers, including historical exclusions from economic opportunities and limited networks for support. With a population density of just 7 people per square mile in some regions, young entrepreneurs lack access to mentorship opportunities that are readily available in more populated areas. Furthermore, the cultural and economic landscape often does not support the growth of diverse business ideas, particularly from underrepresented communities.
Due to these challenges, highly motivated individuals may find themselves without the necessary guidance and resources to launch their ventures effectively. Furthermore, the existing infrastructure – such as internet access and transportation – typically hinders connectivity and access to broader markets and professional networks, making entrepreneurship feel out of reach for many.
