Montana's wildlife conservation education efforts operate across 147,000 square miles served by only 11 regional offices of the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. This distribution leaves eastern plains counties with limited staff for school-based workshops compared with western mountain districts.
High school biology teachers in Phillips and Garfield counties report fewer than two certified natural resource educators per 1,000 students, constraining delivery of field components required for credit-bearing programs. Community groups in these areas must transport participants 80 miles or more to reach sites with active monitoring projects.
Grant support can fund mobile equipment kits and data loggers that meet the department's telemetry standards for student-collected observations. Research teams may request resources to analyze migration corridor data from the Hi-Line region, where oil and gas development overlaps with pronghorn routes.
Nonprofit organizations must demonstrate that proposed curricula incorporate the state's existing hunter education certification modules rather than duplicating them.
