Of these, only 31 report capacity for multi-day outdoor events without supplemental employment.

Artists based in Missoula and Bozeman encounter seasonal venue closures during shoulder months, while those in Billings and Great Falls compete for bookings at the same five established outdoor sites. Workforce shortages extend to production roles; certified sound engineers and stagehands number fewer than 60 statewide outside university towns.

Geographic isolation affects 48 percent of the population living more than 50 miles from an incorporated city. This creates direct constraints on assembling ensembles for single-day festivals because round-trip travel exceeds eight hours for many eastern Montana musicians.

Grant funding of up to $5,000 can cover artist fees at prevailing regional rates of $350-$600 per performance and reimburse fuel and equipment transport for events held at county fairgrounds or state park amphitheaters. Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations must submit documentation of liability insurance and confirmation that events remain free and open to the public.

Montana differs from Idaho and Wyoming in its requirement that at least one primary performer reside within the host county or an adjacent county. This residency rule addresses documented out-migration of working musicians to larger western markets.
