Rural clinics in these counties operate with one full-time equivalent physician and rely on locum tenens coverage for 11 months each year. Patients must travel an average 87 miles for specialty follow-up when connectivity cannot support video visits. The resulting deferred care increases emergency transfers to Billings or Great Falls by 22 percent compared with connected frontier counties.
This funding enables Montana nonprofits to underwrite last-mile equipment and training for clinic staff rather than broad infrastructure builds. Proposals must identify specific health centers already designated as telehealth originating sites by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services and include engineering estimates capped at $4,200 per endpoint.
Successful applications demonstrate that selected sites already hold FCC Rural Health Care Program eligibility and commit to submitting utilization reports to the Montana Telehealth Network for two years post-installation.
