Montana lacks a centralized electronic health-record system linking schools to dental providers, creating delays of four to six weeks between screening and referral completion. The state’s 56 counties contain only 47 pediatric dentists, with 32 counties reporting zero specialists. This distribution leaves children under 12 in the Hi-Line region facing average travel distances of 87 miles for follow-up care.
Readiness_first Public schools in the state operate under per-pupil funding formulas that allocate no dedicated dollars for oral-health infrastructure. In the 2022–2023 school year, 68 percent of elementary buildings lacked private space suitable for intraoral examinations, forcing screenings into gymnasiums or cafeterias where privacy standards cannot be met.
Evidence-Based Oral Health Screening Programs in Montana Applicants must hold current Montana school-nurse or dental-hygienist licensure and provide memoranda of understanding with at least two school districts covering grades K–6. Proposals require submission of validated screening instruments such as the Basic Screening Survey protocol and a plan for same-day fluoride-varnish application where permitted by scope-of-practice rules. Data-sharing agreements with the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services are mandatory to track referral completion rates.
The state’s frontier designation means reviewers prioritize projects that equip existing community health centers rather than constructing new facilities. Unlike Idaho or Wyoming, Montana ties grant scoring to demonstrated ability to integrate screening results into the state’s immunization registry within 30 days of each event.
