Grant Overview

Montana faces significant healthcare capacity gaps, particularly in rural areas where 55 of 56 counties have been designated as healthcare professional shortage areas by the Montana Healthcare Workforce Advisory Committee. Existing telehealth infrastructure is insufficient to meet rural healthcare needs, creating substantial barriers to care. Montana's Rural Healthcare Landscape is characterized by vast distances and limited provider availability. Who Faces Capacity Constraints in Montana? Rural healthcare providers and isolated communities are most affected by these capacity gaps. They struggle with transportation challenges and limited access to specialized care. The Telehealth Expansion for Isolated Communities initiative directly addresses these capacity constraints by implementing a robust telemedicine platform. This project will improve access to healthcare services for Montana's isolated populations. Montana's Frontier Counties present unique challenges due to their extreme rural nature and limited broadband connectivity. Success will be measured through improvements in health outcomes and patient satisfaction. The state's geographic isolation and rural nature require specialized telehealth solutions that can operate effectively with limited internet connectivity. Unlike Wyoming's frontier model, Montana's initiative must adapt to its unique mix of ranching and Native American reservation communities. The state's major industries, including agriculture and tourism, have significant workforce healthcare needs. Montana's infrastructure includes critical access hospitals that will be integrated into the telehealth network.
