Montana's vast geography and sparse population create significant challenges for theatre practitioners, particularly in rural areas. With 44% of the state's population living in rural counties, access to resources, training, and audiences is limited. The Connecting Urban and Rural Voices in Montana Theatre project addresses these capacity gaps by bringing together writers from urban and rural settings to co-create new works. Montana's theatre infrastructure is characterized by a handful of urban-based companies, with limited opportunities for rural artists to engage with the mainstream theatre scene. To participate, applicants must demonstrate a willingness to collaborate with partners from different geographic locations. The initiative will provide training and resources to help build the capacity of rural theatre practitioners. Montana's Rural Theatre Landscape: Challenges and Opportunities. The state's unique blend of Native American reservations, ranching communities, and small towns demands a tailored approach to theatre development.
