This skills gap perpetuates economic disparities, especially for marginalized groups such as Native Americans, who make up 6.7% of Montana's population.
To address these labor market inequities, this grant program will fund skills training initiatives in Montana's rural regions. By partnering with local community colleges and technical schools, we will create tailored programs to prepare residents for in-demand occupations in industries like agriculture, manufacturing, and healthcare. These programs will emphasize hands-on learning, industry certifications, and wraparound support services to ensure participants complete their training and successfully transition into the workforce.
A key focus will be addressing critical labor shortages in Montana's rural healthcare system. Many frontier counties face severe shortages of primary care providers, with some areas having only one doctor per 3,000 residents - three times the national average. This grant funding will support the development of rural healthcare training pipelines, from certified nursing assistants to nurse practitioners, to strengthen the local care delivery workforce.
Program success will be measured through metrics such as the number of individuals completing training, job placement rates, and the economic impact within target communities. By investing in rural Montanans' career development, this initiative aims to create a more equitable and resilient workforce that can sustain the state's vital industries and improve the quality of life for families across its vast, sparsely populated landscape.
Unlike some of its neighbors, Montana faces particularly acute rural-urban divides, with over 44% of the state's population living in frontier counties.
