Montana Pediatric Behavioral Health Research Barriers Montana’s 23 frontier counties, defined by fewer than six residents per square mile, lack board-certified child psychiatrists at a ratio of one per 28,000 children under 18. This scarcity directly limits the pool of investigators who can lead hypothesis-driven studies on school-based emotional regulation interventions. Children in these counties travel an average of 87 miles to the nearest child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic, according to 2021 Montana Department of Public Health data. Teachers in districts such as Garfield and Petroleum counties therefore serve as de facto first responders, yet they receive no standardized training in validated screening instruments that could generate research-grade data. The behavioral health support initiative context requires investigators to document how project-based grants will collect outcome measures across dispersed one-room and two-room schools. Telehealth connectivity exists in only 41 percent of these counties at speeds sufficient for real-time observational coding, creating a technical barrier that must be addressed before any career-development award can proceed. Funding tracks prioritize proposals that include memoranda of understanding with the Montana Office of Public Instruction and at least two tribal education agencies on the Fort Peck or Crow reservations. Summer fellowship applications must show that student travel budgets account for winter road closures on U.S. 2 and U.S. 12, conditions not present in lower-elevation states.
